Teammates now, rivals next round
It’s just after 2 pm on Saturday 15 August, and the Austria Center Vienna, more used to hosting conferences, is a gaming arena bathed in blue light. The action is streaming live on Twitch, YouTube and many of the players’ own channels. For the LUX FUX crew, there’s no time to watch. Thomas is pulling a clip from a round that’s just ended while David writes the caption.
Welcome to Red Bull Reshuffle
This Fortnite tournament, organised by Red Bull Austria, brings together 40 pro players, streamers and YouTubers from around the world. It works like this: everyone plays in duos, and every duo is split up after each round. The player covering your back in round one could be the one who knocks you out in round two.
New partners, new match-ups and, for us, a constant supply of new footage. Around 1,000 fans are watching in the sold-out hall, and hundreds of thousands more are following online. Our job is to get each moment out to them before the next reshuffle.
Rewind to Thursday
Our work for Reshuffle started well before the first match. We’d designed the custom event page on redbull.com in the lead-up, and on Thursday evening David was at the venue gathering footage from other freelancers. On Friday, he and Marlies got cooking on the first clips, and Saturday morning was the calm before the stream: graphics, last edits and whatever else Red Bull Austria needed.
Back on air
One pairing per round was left to the fans, who voted for the duo they most wanted to see. Their pick: MrSavage and Mongraal, rivals for years, now on the same team. Spicy. Exactly the kind of moment we were there to clip.
Then came the evening grind. We cut clips from the stream and pushed them out on Red Bull Austria’s Instagram, TikTok and X, squeezing final edits in between captions. Oh, and someone had to moderate the Twitch chat, too.
Not everything got the full edit. On TikTok and X especially, a good play straight off the stream can carry a post on its own, so we often posted raw gameplay just as it came.
Red Bull Reshuffle was built to find the best teammate, not the best player. After six rounds, that was Juu.
Our own team got reshuffled too, with David teaming up with Marlies on Friday and Thomas on Saturday. However the LUX FUX crew lined up, the feed never missed a beat.
